Spruce (Picea Abies) is growing in NorthEurope, in mountainous areas in Mid Europe, in North Russia and in North Asia.The trees are cut when they have reached a height of 15 – 30 m and a diameter of 25 – 50 cm. Because of the cold climate in Sweden the trees are growing slow. Spruce trees in South Sweden will be cut at an age of 80-90 years and in North Sweden at an age of 90 – 120 years. 50% of the growing stock in Sweden is Spruce. Spruce is often called “Whitewood“.

Use of Spruce, examples: Roof trusses, wall studs, beams and joists, interior and exterior panelling, laminated glued wood, scaffolding and formwork, flooring, doors, outside fencing. Some selected qualities are used in airplanes.

Pine (Pinus Silvestris) is growing in most European forests, in Asia to the east to Amur and to the north to Siberia. The trees are cut when they have reached a height of 15 – 30 m and a diameter of 25 – 50 cm. Because of the cold climate in Sweden the trees are growing slow. Pine trees in South Sweden will be cut at an age of 80-90 years and in North Sweden at an age of 90 – 120 years. 40% of the growing stock in Sweden is Pine. Pine is often called “Redwood“.

Use of Pine, examples: Roof trusses, wall studs, beams and joists, interior panelling, scaffolding and formwork, flooring, doors, windows, furniture, interior joinery.
Physical properties parallel to the grains for knotfree pine and spruce with straight grains and 12% moisture content. The (lower values) are valid perpendicular to the grains.
